Director Masaki Kobayahsi tells four haunting tales adapted from Laficiadio Hearn’s  famous collections of Japanese folklore. This vintage film is reminiscent of classical Japanese theater such as Noh or Kabuki theater with stunning visuals and slow pace.

 Film in Japanese with English subtitles. Show begins at 1:00 pm. Running time is 3 hours and 3 minutes.

Founded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others, the international textiles, ceramics, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice.

Film Screening and Conversations with Filmmaker Majorie Hunt and New Mexico artisans featured in the film.

Good Work: Masters of the Building Arts is a 65-minutr documentary film portrait of artisans from across America working in the building trades, including Hispanic adobe builders in Abiquiu, New Mexico

Majorie Hunt is a folklorist and curator with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Her previous film, The Stone Carvers, won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

Vital Spaces NM challenges you to recreate or reinterpret works of art from New Mexico-based collections and post your pictures to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter using #NMtwinning. Check out #mettwinning and #betweenartandquarantine for inspiration.

Beginning on May 4, 2020 and continuing for the next four weeks, five submissions from each week will be randomly selected to receive a $200 prize thanks to a generous grant from the Falling Colors Foundation. While anyone is welcome to participate, you must live in New Mexico to be eligible to win a prize.

One of each of the five weekly prizes will be designated for a submission from a middle or high school student.

At the end of the four weeks, staff members from each institution will vote on the top three submissions amongst all of the posts and those winners will each receive a prize of $300. The winners of all the prizes will have the choice to receive the money personally or to donate it to the All Together New Mexico Fund.

Vital Spaces plans to hold a show of the winning works at our exhibition space on Santa Fe’s midtown campus when we reopen.
