Ongoing Activities


toddler in toy areaChildren and the young at heart enjoy the book and toy lounge featuring books related to current exhibitions and toys that stimulate the imagination such as FolkManis hand puppets, a variety of building materials and blocks, doll house, train set (photo, left) and more! A generous selection of multicultural children's books and books for adults makes this a must visit for families with children. Display cases with special appeal to children are noted in the gallery guide for the exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond» in the Girard Wing. Lloyd's Treasure Chest in the basement of the Neutrogena Wing », is a unique opportunity for all ages to go behind the scenes at the Museum. All age hands-on art making programs are offered seasonally, see Events below.


Needles+Pins logoA variety of tools are juxtaposed with examples of the beautiful textiles that result featuring pieces from the Museum's unsurpassed collection of textiles and costumes from many cultures and regions. Continuing through January 4, 2009 in the Cotsen Gallery, Neutrogena Wing, visitors are invited to:

FINAL DAY for the exhibition Gee's Bend Quilts & Beyond: Louisiana Bendolph, Mary Lee Bendolph, Thornton Dial & Lonnie Holley»
This exhibit examines Bendolph's inspiration and creative process as well as her profound connection to the cultural practices and expressive traditions from which her work arises. Twelve dramatically designed, richly colored, improvisational quilts created by Mary Lee Bendolph and her family members; her mother Aolar Mosely, her daughter, Essie B. Pettway, and her daughter-in-law Louisiana P. Bendolph, are presented alongside evocative found object sculptures by noted African American self-taught artists Thornton Dial and visionary "yard art" artist Lonnie Holley and intaglio prints by the tree features artists. Films accompany this powerful exhibition.
