Even
before she was voted Santa Fe High Artist of the Year in 1978, Jean Anaya Moya
had been interested in art. "I've loved art my whole life," she says.
Her first interest was drawing and painting. Moya, along with her sister-in-law,
Diana Moya Luján, took a straw appliqué class from Charlie Sánchez
at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA). Now a prize-winning artist, this
part-time fire fighter still marvels at the artistic process: "It's about
creating art work and having fun doing it. The reason my pieces are different
is that I still have a love for retablos, which is why you see so many figures
in my work. I also love to tell stories through my art."
