Jean Anaya Moya
(b. 1960)

San IsidroEven before she was voted Santa Fe High Artist of the Year in 1978, Jean Anaya Moya had been interested in art. "I've loved art my whole life," she says. Her first interest was drawing and painting. Moya, along with her sister-in-law, Diana Moya Luján, took a straw appliqué class from Charlie Sánchez at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA). Now a prize-winning artist, this part-time fire fighter still marvels at the artistic process: "It's about creating art work and having fun doing it. The reason my pieces are different is that I still have a love for retablos, which is why you see so many figures in my work. I also love to tell stories through my art."

Moya also paints retablos and animal hides. For a long time she felt that the art of straw appliqué didn't get noticed because there were so few artists doing it, and that it was often misunderstood. Each year, she keeps one of her own pieces so that her family can have a collection. She started doing this because she knows so many artists and families who, for a variety of reasons, weren't able to keep their own art, and can't afford to buy them today.

"The neatest thing about being an artist is that my kids Craig and Matthew (both award-winning artists in Youth Market) became interested." Moya collects horses (all kinds!) and crosses.
