A Saint in the City : Sufi Arts of Urban
Senegal
Sunday September 30
FINAL DAY to see this exhibition in Santa Fe!
The
first exhibition devoted to contemporary arts of
Islamic Africa, and to the life of an African Saint. Developed
by the
Fowler Museum at UCLA», as Passport to Paradise,
the traveling exhibition coveys the ongoing creative spirit
and artistic vitality of Africa today. The exhibition
presents a striking range of 20th and 21st century art
forms associated with the Mouride movement, a Sufi sect
in Senegal with a rapidly expanding diaspora throughout
the world, especially in American cities. Mourides are
known for their hard work, peaceful presence, and their
art forms honoring the mystic, poet and pacifist, Sheik
Amadou Bamba (1853-1927).
Photo, right: Historic photo of Sheikh Amadou Bamba, Djourbel,
Senegal, 1913. Photo reproduction by Don Cole The only
known photograph of Amadou Bamba was taken in 1913 while
he was under house arrest by the French colonial authorities
in Djourbel. Although the negative can no longer be found,
the photograph has taken on a life of it's own. It is
reproduced all over Senegal and the diaspora, and has
been the visual catalyst for an exploration of artistic
imagery during the past twenty years. The photograph illustrated
here was taken from the microfilm of the book in which
the photograph was first published (Marty 1917,222)
