Founded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others, the international textiles, ceramics, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice.

Conversations: Intimate Salons with Folk Art Makers, Collectors & Icons
Friends of Folk Art (FOFA) Lectures and Talks Featured Event

Conversations: Intimate Salons with Folk Art Makers, Collectors & Icons

August 25, 2022
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Join the Friends of Folk Art to hear the personal stories of Casa Nova owner, Natalie Fitz-Gerald, as part of FOFA’s Conversations Series. She will be discussing her evolution and experiences as a collector and purveyor of African art. Participants will have the unique opportunity to gather in Natalie’s home to view her extensive collection of South African folk art.

Natalie is a native of South Africa and a grateful citizen of Santa Fe. For many years, she admired and lived with the art being produced by rural and urban cooperatives and artists in South Africa.  She knew she wanted to open a space to showcase and celebrate this exceptional work. Natalie founded Casa Nova in 2003 as a home for the exceptional craft and design talent she saw in her native land and brought South African folk art to Santa Fe.  A gallery was born within a contemporary context to showcase rural creativity, fine craft, cutting-edge urban design and folk art.  A special emphasis was placed on the work of cooperatives which had been funded in the interest of poverty alleviation and creating sustainable livelihoods, many of them being women.
